They were taken on April 23, 1982, when Key West succeeded from the United States and became the Conch Republic in response to a US Border Patrol roadblock south of Florida City causing Keys residents to have to prove their citizenship to enter the mainland of Florida. Seven of the photos show the crowd gathering for ceremony, the rest show important figures speaking at the ceremony.
