520 3    |a Prosperity campaigns have played a critical role in improving the economic well-being of low-income, working families, boosting income levels and lifting many families out of poverty. Knight Foundation-funded organizations are part of efforts to secure and return EITC dollars to low-income working families in targeted communities. For example, in 2005, the Knight Foundation-funded organizations included in this study, collectively, operated 118 free tax preparation sites, prepared and filed over 16,000 federal income tax returns, and returned close to $22 million in federal refunds to their local communities, including $9 million in EITC refunds.
