Abstract:
Paño for Yemojá, blue satin garment decorated with intricate stitching made by Jorge Ortega. Features peacock designs in four quadrants of panel. Commissioned and purchased for Historical Museum of Southern Florida (HistoryMiami Museum) exhibit, "At the Crossroads: Afro-Cuban Orisha Arts in Miami," February 23- August 8, 2001."Paños" such as this one are used to "dress" deities on special occasions - for the most part their function is ornamental. When hung in thrones/altars they serve as flags of the orishas. Yemojá uses the ritual colors blue and opal or crystal, and her ritual instrument is a fan adorned with peacock feathers. ( en )
