Abstract:
Crown made by Frank Mendez. Wooden crown, base and vessel, painted red. Decorated with red and white beaded nets and strands, with cowrie shells.  Fifteen feathers on top of crown, dyed red.  Leopard skin fabric piece with red and white beaded strands with cowries. Commissioned and purchased for Historical Museum of Southern Florida (HistoryMiami Museum) exhibit, "At the Crossroads: Afro-Cuban Orisha Arts in Miami," February 23- August 8, 2001.  Such a crown would be used in Orisha religious ceremonies/altars associated with the deity 'Dadà'.  This deity's domain is unborn children, and its ritual colors are red and white.
