Notes

Abstract:
Tony Tommie and Miss Miami (Sarah Jane Helliker) at Forward to the Soil ceremony. He is wearing a Seminole longshirt and a Plains Indian eagle feather bonnet. Forward to the Soil, held on January 29, 1927, was an audacious 'land give-away ceremony' involving some 30 hired Seminoles. As the event was considered a potential threat to their sovereignty, The Seminole traditional council of elders was prompted to alert Washington and denounced Creek Seminole Tony Tommie (Panther clan) (in the war bonnet) for his active role in the event. -- Patsy West, in The Seminole and Miccosukee Tribes of Southern Florida (Arcadia, 2002), p. 68.
