Abstract:
Aerial view of ship, the Grand Haven, from low altitude airplane. The Grand Haven, one of the West India Fruit and Steamship Company's ferries, transported railroad cars between Palm Beach and Havana from the late 1940s until 1960. "The ferry in the picture - the "Grand Haven" - is not placed in service until after World War II, and, by that time, the car ferry company has been sold off by the Flagler interests to the West India Fruit and Steamship Company so that it would be almost forty years after the events covered in the article and, therefore, not appropriate. It is not one of the original Flagler ferries, the "Grand Haven" was, of course, a railroad car ferry on the Great Lakes prior to moving to the Palm Beach/Havana run. It was added to the service because of the post-World War II economic boom in Cuba. And finally, the "New Grand Haven", a newly-built ferry, was added in 1959 but only served on the run for a year before the ferry service to Havana ended. " -- Jesus Mendez. ( en )
