Notes
Abstract:
Aerial view of Chapman Field and environs. This US Army Signal Corps Aerial Gunnery Field was located at Chapman Field Drive and Old Cutler Road. Army prototype buildings designed by Architect Albert Kahn were completed but the facility was not activated because the war ended. Attempts to sell the property in 1921 were derailed because U. S. Government did not have clear title to all of the land. All World War I buildings were destroyed by the September 1926 hurricane. In 1925 a portion of the site was turned over to the U. S. Department of Agriculture for its plant introduction garden. Attempts to reactivate air field by Commander Earl Hoag between 1931 and 1935 were defeated by Col. Montgomery, David Fairchild, Charles Deering and U. S. D. A. because of its impact on the U. S. D. A. 's and Montgomery's Botanical Gardens. It had limited use during war as a training facility and was also used by University of Miami. It was deactivated as an airfield around 1947 when Embry-Riddle moved its training operations to Opa-locka. -- Antolin Carbonell. ( en )
