The Townsend Plan, promoted by Francis Everett Townsend, proposed that every person over 60 be paid $200 a month. According to the Social Security office, "There is even some evidence that President Roosevelt introduced his Social Security proposals when he did in order to stave off pressure from the Townsend Plan and related alternative pension schemes." |
