General Note:
Townsend Club members, seated in front of small building, holding a banner reading "1776 164 years of independence. 'God Bless America' with the Townsend Plan. We are proud to be Americans" Handwritten on back: "taken at the southeast corner of NE 2nd Avenue and NE 3rd Street." Published in the Sun Sentinel, 16 November 1980 The Townsend Plan, promoted by Francis Everett Townsend, proposed that every person over 60 be paid $200 a month. According to the Social Security office, "There is even some evidence that President Roosevelt introduced his Social Security proposals when he did in order to stave off pressure from the Townsend Plan and related alternative pension schemes."
