|a Mangrove forests of southern Florida cover about 140,000 ha, of which two thirds are in Everglades National Park. The very gentle elevational gradient at the southern tip of the Florida peninsula provides a wide area (1-8 km) of habitat for the salt-tolerant trees. It is the interplay of freshwater discharge and saltwater intrusion, driven by persistent winds, that influences the salinity of the eastern portion of the mangrove zone. Irregular wind-driven tides are effective along a very narrow band of the shore of Florida Bay, while the coastal area bordering the
Gulf of Mexico experiences diurnal tides (D. White, pers. comm.). |
