The complex maze of water control works now in place in central and south Florida exemplifies the degree to which man, in a short time, can alter a drainageway formed over millenia. Once a truly dynamic system esponding to the cycles of flood and drought common to subtropical Florida, this waterway is now fully controlled by water management schedules and structures designed to meet the varied needs of man.
