|a STATE OF FLORIDA; DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION; FLORIDA NEWS BUREAU; TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA; ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.--A highlight of any visit to the nation's oldest permanent settlement is the old fort, Castillo de San Marcos, which is a national monument. It was started in 1672 and the 16-foot thick walls were made of coquina, the shellrock quarried from pits across the bay on Anastasia Island. This fort, remarkably well preserved, is an excellent example of Spanish Renaissance fortification. It will be a chief attraction during the St. Augustine 400th Anniversary Celebration. |
