Notes
Scope and Content:
Miami Beach was an attraction for affluent people to entertain themselves through leisure activities. Anti-Semitism from the locals led the Jewish community to be isolated in one area, where they created businesses and flourished. Many were involved in the Civil Rights Movement and founded the Center of Racial Equality (C.O.R.E.). The Black community faced discrimination as well and although they could work in Miami Beach, they could not stay there. The acts of Nelson Mandela, along with other activists, pushed for more rights leading to progress. Miami Beach became a place for Cubans to escape prosecution, vacation, and find jobs. Over time, they entered politics and the culture of the city. The LGBTQ community protested for human rights after being condemned publicly. After a long struggle for rights, Miami Beach is now one of the most gay-friendly cities. ( English )
