Notes

Scope and Content:
Jud Kurlancheek began working in Miami Beach as a planner in 1970, and he advanced to be the planning director. The city struggled financially and had a redevelopment plan that would demolish all of the buildings on Sixth Street to build canals. This was opposed by the artists, architects, and preservationists who wanted to renovate the Art Deco buildings. Being the planning director, he was caught in the middle and shifted towards historic preservation of the buildings. He had a plan to rebrand the city to make the government officials see the value in keeping the architecture. This was successful and the area became known as the "Art Deco" district. ( English )
Biographical:
Filmed in his home on Key Biscayne June 30, 2021. Jud Kurlancheek was Director of the Miami Beach Department of Planning and Zoning from 1984-1990. He oversaw the renovation of Ocean Drive and Lummus Park, which allowed space for sidewalk cafes next to an enhanced beach landscape. During his tenure he was responsible for the Design Review Board, the Historic Preservation Board, and the Zoning Ordinance Board. He talks about the challenges of envisioning the Beach's future and overseeing the planning during the rediscovery of South Beach as a tourist destination balanced with the needs of a vocal residential population. Zoning was key and controversial for that reason. He discusses the subtleties of corruption during the South Beach development boom.
