Scope and Content:
Michael Góngora made history by being the first openly gay commissioner. He speaks of his experience coming out to his family and their reception to it. During his political campaign, he was told not to mention being gay, but after revealing it during a debate, many LGBTQ organizations gave their support leading him to win. ( English )
Biographical:
Filmed in Miami Beach City Hall, July 1, 2021 Michael Góngora (born March 27, 1970) was Miami Beach's first and only openly gay elected commissioner and vice mayor. Góngora was also the first openly gay Hispanic to win elected office in the State of Florida. As commissioner, he pushed for the first citywide recycling program, founded the city sustainability committee and helped create a sustainability plan designed to encourage developers to erect greener buildings.
