Notes
Scope and Content:
Joe Fleming speaks of his involvement in environmental litigation before moving to historical preservation and the MDPL. He provided his legal expertise to represent cases that dealt with historic preservation and environmental conservation. Fleming became a legal advisor and lawyer intent on preserving the beauty of the Art Deco District. He continued his work with the MDPL after Barbara Capitman's passing and went on to fight against a canal being built in Miami that could expose Biscayne Bay to pollution. ( English )
Biographical:
Filmed in the Miami Beach Art Deco Museum on June 20, 2021. Joe Fleming is an attorney who has specialized in land-use litigation impinging upon environmental conservation and historic preservation. His successful efforts to stop the building of a jetport in the Everglades, where he represented the Audubon Society, and his legal participation in saving the Biltmore Hotel from destruction, attracted the attention of Barbara Capitman, campaigning to preserve Miami Beach's Art Deco district. He worked closely with Capitman and the Miami Design Preservation League as its attorney and legal strategist in the battle to prevent the redevelopment of South Beach with high rises and canals. He is currently engaged in a campaign to save the Royal Palms from being replaced with shade trees, contending that the iconic palms are part of the historic landscape of Miami Beach.
