|a Caryl Rose Unger came to Miami Beach in the pre-World War II days. Her father, Joseph Rose, like many New Yorkers, saw opportunity in Miami Beach and moved his family to what was then a small town winter beach resort. Mr. Rose built the original Royal Palm Hotel. He was involved in the many details of creating a competitive resort hotel. Ms. Unger recalls begging him to install a swimming pool, which he did, where she, her children and many guests learned to swim. Ms. Rose recalls as a child evacuating just prior to a hurricane, waiting out the fierce storm in a hotel room in downtown Miami. She talks about working at the hotel as a youth and going to nightclubs on dates as a young teen, permitted by her parents because “everybody did it.” She relates the challenges of the hotel business and the down side of being an Army barracks during World War II, which nearly destroyed her father’s business. |
