Notes
General Note:
The film contains video, but no audio, until the 3:40 mark. At 3:40, Gene Tinnie, Chair of the Virginia Key Park Trust, discusses the history of the Virginia Key Beach Park Trust. The presentation includes pictures and descriptions for each of the Virginia Key Beach Park trustees and a discussion about the history of Virginia Key, and the reason for the meeting. Next, the group notes that it is important to let the general public know that the nearby sewage treatment plant has not impacted the local waters of Virginia Key Beach. Next, they discuss their plans to remove the invasive plant and animal species found on Virginia Key. They want to try to return the beach to its natural ecosystem. The participants then discuss how their goals for the park could help bring in other parties who are interested in preservation. They believe that bringing in additional help to preserve Virginia Key Beach could help fight unwanted development in the park. They also speculate about plans to stimulate economic development in the park. They want the park to generate revenue that will in turn convince the city to keep the park free of development. Gene Tinnie suggests that the Miami marine stadium near Virginia Key may provide on possible answer to the revenue question. The meeting ends with a call to raise awareness of Virginia Key. The participants want to go door to door in Overtown and Liberty City to try and organize the public in their effort to preserve Virginia Key.
