Abstract:
Athalie Range and Garth C. Reeves sit outside at an event at Virginia Key Beach Park. Athalie Range was a civil rights activist and politician. She was the first African-American to serve on Miami's City Commission and the first woman, and African-American since Reconstruction, to head a Florida state agency. Garth C. Reeves is the publisher emeritus of the Miami Times, the oldest and largest black-owned newspaper in the southeastern United States. Reeves worked at the Times for over five decades as a columnist, editor, and publisher, and was the first African-American to serve on several local boards. ( en )
