Abstract:
Detailed assessment of pilot watershed areas of Alazani-Iori and Rioni river basins includes: Collection of detailed data on current patterns of natural resource use; Synthesis and analysis of data to identify the links between utilization of natural resources and the ecosystem services that encompass them; Identification of priority community- and watershed-level issues; Identification of the potential for sustainable use and integrated management of natural resources that will positively reflect on the human health and economic situation, as well as the watershed’s environmental sustainability; Recommendations on the proper utilization of natural resources to mitigate existing 7 negative impacts on the environment and demonstrate integrated management of natural resources to achieve desirable and realistic objectives. Integrated Natural Resource Management Plans will be elaborated based on detailed watershed assessments and in close participation with the local communities and authorities in the pilot watershed areas. Priority actions from the watershed plans will be implemented through a small grant program that will demonstrate the advantages of integrated natural resource management by local stakeholders and support scaling these models up across the country.
