Abstract:
Fan made by Nayla Llanes using blue/silver embossed satin fabric, metallic ribbon, beads, and sequins. White and peacock feathers protrude from edge. Wide ruled notebook covered with blue/silver embossed fabric. Front cover has raised decorative panel with female head adorned with blue/silver fabric, beads, and thread. Has five ribbon bookmarks (red, blue, yellow, white) with beads at the ends. The notebook and fan form part of a set of items that would be used in the initiation of a devotee of Yemoja, an Orisha deity. Yemojá is the mother of all waters, and her particular domain is the ocean. Her ritual colors are blue and opal or crystal. She is syncretized in Cuban Catholicism with Our Lady of Regla. Commissioned and purchased for Historical Museum of Southern Florida (HistoryMiami Museum) exhibit, "At the Crossroads: Afro-Cuban Orisha Arts in Miami," February 23- August 8, 2001. ( en )
