Abstract:
Wooden bowl figure decorated in red and white beadwork. Includes a heavy beaded necklace, red and white, with cowrie shells at the end of the tassels. There are five smaller and one larger bunch of tassels at intervals throughout necklace. On either side of the larger tassel are "nets" of beaded strands and tassels with cowries. Such a necklace would be used in Orisha religious ceremonies/altars associated with the Orisha deity Chango, whose ritual colors are red and white. This necklace was exhibited as part of a ritual throne/altar for Chango. Commissioned and purchased for Historical Museum of Southern Florida (HistoryMiami Museum) exhibit, "At the Crossroads: Afro-Cuban Orisha Arts in Miami," February 23- August 8, 2001. ( en )
