|a Matheson Hammock Park was named for William J. Matheson, a chemist from Wisconsin, who acquired his wealth in the dye business. Matheson donated the original 80-acre tract to Matheson Hammock Park. An additional 550-acre tract was donated by the Matheson family and other donors, expanding the park's grounds to 630 acres. The park has mangroves, a hardwood forest, a marina, a man-made atoll pool, and amenities such as the Red Fish Grill. Fifteen native hardwood species can be seen on the nature trails that wind through the park. The Civilian Conservation Corps built Matheson Hammock Park between 1935-1940. Assisting in the design of the park were R.C. Ward, William Lyman Phillips, and A.D. Barnes. The eastern side of Matheson Hammock Park is bordered by Biscayne Bay. The park's entrance is located at 9610 Old Cutler Road in Coral Gables. |
