Scope and Content:
The history of George Washington Carver Middle School can be traced back to 1924, when George Merrick offered the Board of Education five acres of land on Grand Avenue, in exchange for a building on Le Jeune Road. Located at 238 Grand Avenue in Coral Gables, an elementary and middle school was originally built to serve Black students. This building, constructed in 1924, was designed by Walter De Garmo and Phineas Paist. The school was named in 1942, for Dr. George Washington Carver, an African American educator, botanist, scientist, and inventor who had been born into slavery. The renowned architect Alfred Browning Parker redesigned and expanded the school in 1952. From 1952 to 1966, it served as a high school. As a magnet school serving grades six through eight today, it has an international studies program and an International Baccalaureate preparation program.
