Notes

Scope and Content:
Narration: The Chinese Villages, the most "exotic" of George Merrick's architecturally themed villages. Henry Killam Murphy, a scholar of Chinese architecture, and a professor of the Yale in China program, designed the cluster of eight homes that were constructed between 1926 and 1927. Each house has glazed tile roofs, elaborate latticework on the balconies and ornate faux bamboo decoration. The strong primary colors, moon gates, and upturned rafters, represent details that reflect the traditional temple architecture of China. The Chinese Village is located on the east side of Highway US1 between Riviera Drive, Maggiore Street, Sansovino Avenue and Castania Avenue.
