Notes

Abstract:
View from side shows the rear of the house and the low brush lining the shore. An African American women stands in the foreground with a basket on her head. Handwritten note of verso from Marion Fairchild, May 7, 1954: "photograph given to us by Mrs. Nugent from whom we bought the place in 1916. As I remember the house burned down. " Original, typed caption attached to verso, possibly written by David Fairchild: "The first house to be built on The Kampong. We were told that it was built by Capt. and Mrs. Simmons when they first bought the place and that they constructed it from plans that they got out of the Encyclopedia Britannica. It stood near what is now the well which was I think not then dug. The view is towards the Bay showing the low brush that lined the shore then. The colored woman has a basket with a single pineapple and some oranges of grapefruits in it. The house was burnt later. I have no dates regarding it. Note the bare limestone rock exposed and the scanty vegetation on it. The house was probably built by J. W. Ewan, who homesteaded the land. Simmons and his wife, Dr. Eleanor Galt, bought the house and property from Ewan in 1892, and briefly occupied the house until it burned down soon thereafter. The property was purchased by Dr. David Fairchild in 1916 and named the Kampong. ( en )
