Notes

Abstract:
View from side shows the rear of the house and the low brush lining the shore. An African American women stands in the foreground with a basket on her head. Handwritten note of verso, probably written by David Fairchild: The beautiful seagrape on the left was the only tree we had to sacrifice for the new home. We moved it to the low land, but it died there. Do you remember our arrival in 1923--M B climbed up in it in the bright moonlight to sing. Another hand written caption on verso: Built by Capt. & Dr. (Mrs. ) Simmons. Bought from Mrs. Nugent in 1916 by David & Marion H. Bell Fairchild. View of the old house from the East showing an olive tree in the foreground and a large sea grape tree which unfortunately had to be cut down. It charmed us for several years with its beauty. A clump of Yuccas stands near the Sea Grape and it too was beautiful when it came into bloom each spring. 1916 or 1917. Built about 1893. ( en )
