General Note:
Historical note: Opponents to mayoral candidate Fred Leroy Purinton expressed concern that the "newly enfranchised" Black vote would vote for him; they intimidated Black voters with burning crosses and increased arrests. Purlington won and served 1948-1954. Text of flyer: Attention: Mr. and Mrs. Voter. Read some facts and vote intelligently. Purington's statement proven untrue when confronted by former city employee. Hood admits untruth concerning $1200.00 "kick-back" on fire hose. The racial question did not exist until Purington came to save the Colored from persecution by the Southerner. Purington has been an agitator among the Colored since his arrival. Purington hired Cline - now wants to fire him to gain favor with the Colored. Purinton caused City Commission to spend $400.00 of the taxpayer's money to fight a lost cause. The Taxpayer's Assn.
