|a Gaylord Cull, artist, designer and performer, is head of Visitor Services at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden. His unique combination of experience and talents is apparent in the visitor experiences he creates. He is well-known for his colorful hats, which he has invented, to help “illustrate” key points of information about the plants, trees, and activities in the Garden. In his interview, he talks about the Garden’s history, its design by Raymond Jungles, and plans for the future. Cull first came to Miami Beach in 1976 as a display designer for Neiman Marcus stores and was tasked with creating more imaginative displays for the Bal Harbour store. He was a close friend of the designer Leonard Horowitz and recalls Horowitz’ campaign, with Barbara Capitman, to paint the old Deco hotels in order to showcase their whimsical Art Deco motifs. |
