General Note:
Two men surrounded by orchids and awards. Published in the Boynton Beach Star with the caption: "Jean and Norman Merkel exhibit some of the many blue ribbons their orchids have won in competition. Orchid fanciers from all over South Fla. came to the orchid show at the Merkel gardens on South Federal Sunday." Historical note: Louis Merkel opened a nursery on S. Federal Highway, Boynton Beach in 1936. Sons Jean and Norman Merkel took over the business and as their focus on orchids grew, the business collected and bred many species, gaining awards and world-wide recognition. Orchid expert Bruno Alberts joined the business in 1947. In 2001, Jean moved the nursery to Hagen Ranch Road. After being hit by hurricanes in 2004 and 2005, it never reopened. Published in the Boynton Beach Star, 29 November 1962.
