Historical note: Historical note: The Gulfstream Mermaid Pageant, the original "Miss Boynton Beach" pageant, was first held in 1955 and was sponsored by the Boynton Beach Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the Winter Fishing Tournament. Five young women were chosen, one representing each of the winter months, and in April, one contestant was chosen "Miss Boynton Beach." In 1962, the Chamber stopped sponsoring the pageant and the tournament. A new pageant was inaugurated 1964, directed by the Junior Woman's Club.
