|a Florida’s geography and diverse ecosystems,
stretching from the Atlantic and Gulf coasts to the
Everglades, places the state in a frontline position
for experiencing the effects of climate change. That
position makes Florida a key state to learn about
the impacts of climate change on fish and wildlife.
The realities of climate change and what they mean
for Florida’s fish and wildlife managers was the
focus of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission’s (FWC) 2008 Summit, Florida’s
Wildlife: On the front line of climate change (www.
ces.fau.edu/floc/).
The FWC invited experts and professionals on
wildlife and climate change to come and share their
knowledge. The Summit covered global, national
and statewide perspectives, species biodiversity
and policies for habitat management. The Summit
attendees represented a diverse set of stakeholders.
After group presentations, participants broke
out into six different workshops where facilitated
information exchange and brainstorming occurred.
The information gathered at the Summit is guiding
the FWC in the development of climate change
strategies to ensure the best possible future for
Florida’s wildlife.
This report summarizes the information from the
presentations and the discussions in the workshops.
It also identifies some of the concerns, which
emerged after three days of discussions about the
potential impacts of climate change for Florida’s
fish and wildlife resources. |
