|a Susan Schermer came to live on Miami Beach as a girl in 1948 and has lived in the same mid-beach area ever since. Mid-beach was an area of reformed, assimilated Jews who owned their own homes and enjoyed a middle-class life of work, leisure and family. She played in Polo Park as a child, remembering the wonderful activities offered for children there. She was an art and music teacher at North Beach Elementary during the first efforts at desegregation. She remembers seeing performers like Barbara Streisand and Belafonte at The Latin Quarter, the nightclub owned by Lou Walters on Palm Island. Ms. Schermer owned Living Things florist shop for 35 years, which was in an historic building on 41st Street. She reminisces about an idyllic childhood where she was felt free and safe. |
