Scope and Content:
Miami Beach Resident Tamara Friedman Nixon's parents were frequent visitors to the Beach in the 1930's. When Ms. Nixon was 3, the family starting coming down each winter, staying at the Broadripple Hotel. When Ms. Nixon was in the fourth grade her family took up permanent residence on the Beach. Her father was an avid golfer and she learned when quite young. She discusses the anti-Semitism of the golf clubs. The term “restricted clientele” was the euphemism for “No Jews allowed.” She discusses the evolution from a Southern small town atmosphere to the cultural mecca that the Beach is today. Ms. Nixon discusses the preservation efforts of trying to keep older homes designed by prominent architects of the day. Her own home, right on the Bay, is an example of the ongoing challenges due primarily to the use of salty beach sand in early construction and the changing tastes of homeowners. Ms. Nixon discusses the work of FAN, the Funding Arts Network. ( English )
