Notes

Abstract:
In this interview, Dr. Ginette Dreyfuss-Diederich shares her life journey from growing up in Haiti to becoming a cultural broker and medical professional in Miami. Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Dreyfuss-Diederich recounts her childhood, education, and the profound impact of Haiti's political landscape on her life. Her experiences range from witnessing pivotal moments in Haiti’s history to studying in the United States, to becoming the first physical therapist in Haiti. She describes her marriage, her husband’s exile during the Duvalier regime, and their eventual move to the Dominican Republic and Mexico before settling in Miami. In Miami, Dreyfuss-Diederich became a psychiatrist, serving the Haitian community during the challenging AIDS crisis and working as a bridge between cultures. The interview highlights her passion for her heritage, the challenges faced by the Haitian diaspora, and her ongoing commitment to improving mental health services for Haitians. She reflects on the cultural differences Haitians face when adapting to life in the U.S., the loss of community cohesion in Little Haiti, and the resilience of the Haitian people.
