Abstract:
This interview Rulx Jean-Bart, conducted on March 7, 2024, at the Sant La Neighborhood Center for the Wolfsonian Public Humanities Lab, explores Jean-Bart's experiences as a Haitian immigrant and community organizer in the United States. Born in Haiti in 1952, Jean-Bart discusses his journey from Haiti to New York in 1967 and later to Miami in 1976. He describes the challenges and transformations faced by the Haitian community, including the struggle for political recognition, social services, and cultural integration. Jean-Bart's narrative emphasizes the importance of grassroots organization, leadership, and education in empowering Haitian refugees and immigrants. He reflects on the shifts in community dynamics, his role in various movements, and his vision for the future of Haitian education and unity in Miami.
