Notes

Abstract:
Robert A. Burr, President of Miami Pioneers Historic Society and Arch Creek Trust Board Member, describes his memories of Arch Creek and discusses his involvement with Arch Creek Trust. He recalls some of the family stories, such as the multitudinous Dade County gatherings once a year at Arch Creek for pioneer-style barbecues or belonging to one of the first pioneer families who settled in the area in 1896, where they learned to live with the resources and food available such as frogs, fish, guavas, mangoes, sea grapes. He also tells the story of his great-grandfather having the first car in the county; who as chairman of the County Commission, had a mission of building roads such as Tamiami Road, the Causeway to Miami Beach, or Biscayne Boulevard, which transformed Miami from wilderness into a big city. Burr celebrates the Arch Creek Trust for being an advocate of the park with politicians and local officials, ensuring the preservation of the site.
