- Biographical:
- Dr. James W. Holsinger, a cardiologist, served for 26 years in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Beginning in 1969, he held appointments at veterans’ hospitals and medical centers in Florida, Nebraska, Connecticut, Georgia, and Virginia. In August 1990, President George H.W. Bush appointed him as Chief Medical Director of the Veterans Health Administration. In 1992, when the agency was restructured, he became Undersecretary for Health, Department of Veterans Affairs. Holsinger also served for over 31 years in the United States Army Reserve, retiring as a Major General in 1993. Following his retirement from the VA in 1994, he went on to serve as Chancellor of the University of Kentucky Medical Center, Secretary of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, as well as Charles T. Wethington Jr. Chair in the Health Sciences at the University of Kentucky and Professor of Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health.
