|a Bette Baron Bernstein moved from Chicago to the Beach with her parents when she was six years old. She has fond memories of early life on the beach and in South Beach schools. She graduated from
Miami Beach High in 1958. When she was 11 she contracted polio and was hospitalized in a boys' and girls' polio ward in Jackson Hospital in 1948. She has strong memories of that time and the intense therapy they went through. After several months she was able to rejoin her classmates and recalls that she was treated only with kindness and compassion. She learned to walk with braces and crutches and participated in debate club and other high school events. She got a law degree from the University of Miami in 1958. She has been an advocate for polio victims and handicapped accessibility. |
