Scope and Content:
Linda Brown Zilber has been a civic activist since she was a teenager. She grew up in Bay Harbor Islands, across the street from the founder/developer Shepard Broad. From the time she was a child, he told her she would someday be mayor. His last public appearance was at her induction as Mayor of Bay Harbor Islands. She had served previously on the commission. Linda attended Miami Beach High School. As a student she was active with the Anti-Defamation League, visiting elementary schools with dolls representing famous people of varied ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Linda talks about spending time with Martin Luther King Jr. in 1955 when he came to town to receive an award from the ADL. She says she knew right away that he was a person who would one day be very famous. Linda was a leader in a number of civic and philanthropic organizations. Her focus was improving the lives of children and the infirm. She talks about starting the Children's Home Society and her work with Marvin Dunn, black community activist, during the integration of the Miami- Dade County public schools. She is a past President of the Jewish Museum-FIU and currently service on the Citizens Independent Transportation Trust, which oversees an equitable distribution of transportation services underwritten by the sales tax appropriated by the county for transport.
