Notes

Scope and Content:
Dennis Scholl is a philanthropist who heads the Division of Cultural Arts at the Knight Foundation. He talks about being part of a group of risk-taking preservation/Deco developers that included Saul Gross (also interviewed), Craig Robbins, Mel Schlesser, and Tony Goldman, who met regularly and worked in unison as part of the private sector working with the public sector (Ernie Martin and federal redevelopment grants). He talks about how they worked to get pro-historic preservation people on the Miami Beach commission. He says the work was financially risky but very exciting. He talks about Tony Goldman as a mentor and visionary. He gives a good summary of the Mariel exodus from Cuba in 1980 and the impact it had on South Beach. Others mentioned: Charlie Burkett, Paul Gioia, Stanley Levine, and Elie Schneiderman.
