Notes

Scope and Content:
Ernie Martin was Deputy Director of Miami-Dade County’s redevelopment office in 1978 when he was approached by Barbara Capitman to see if the county could help financially with the preservation of the Art Deco district. Ernie was able to structure a grant which used federal redevelopment funds for distressed areas at a time when an infusion of funding was critical to Capitman’s success. He talks about that process and how his academic training as an urban planner and professional experience doing redevelopment in historic New Orleans enabled him to be of service in joining the public and private sectors in the Miami Beach project. He mentions Barbara and Andrew Capitman, Denis Russ, Jerry Sanchez, and Tony Goldman. He also talks about the impact of Miami Vice on the renewal. He gives a very cogent timeline of the preservation effort.
