Notes

Summary:
This document presents the disaster risk reduction (DRR) policy for the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAid), whose goal is to enhance the resilience and reduce the vulnerability of states and communities to disasters (p. viii). AusAID expects its DRR policy to produce four outcomes: 1) the integration of DRR into Australian aid programs; 2) the strengthening of partner countries’ capacities in line with the Hyogo Framework of Action (HFA); 3) the support and enhancement of leadership understanding and citizen advocacy for DRR; and 4) the harmonization of DRR and climate change adaptation (CCA) policies. The document seamlessly integrates the most current DRR perspectives into Australia’s aid program while offering a synopsis of AusAID’s present DRR programs. It is clear and concise in its definitions of hazard, vulnerability, risk, and DRR in addition to outlining the current global disaster challenges and global DRR goals. Most importantly, it addresses the link between DRR and sustainable development, and the necessity that coordination is facilitated between national and local actors. This document is beneficial to policymakers because it outlines the manner in which an organization can integrate DRR initiatives into its broader development objectives, coordinating with other organizations and actors to produce the most effective and efficient DRR policy possible.
