Summary:
This document is a profile on the International Development Association (IDA) prepared by the World Bank. It summarizes the organization’s mandate and its track record on disaster risk reduction (DRR) in order to illustrate its effectiveness and the long-term need for its services. Natural disasters are a major source of risk for poor people, as they often live on the most fragile lands, unsafe structures, and have fewer resources with which to protect themselves. The IDA, one of the largest humanitarian donors, plays a key role in disaster reconstruction and increasingly in risk reduction before disaster strikes. The IDA provides post-disaster assistance to local communities, manages projects, educates, and develops risk finance programs that build on these communities’ existing policies and capabilities. The IDA works in concert with these teams to develop risk assessment methodologies that address economic loss and the financial needs of communities requesting World Bank assistance. The IDA’s emphasis on agility and innovation has earned it positive assessments by the World Bank’s Independent Evaluation Group.The document also examines the IDA in its larger context, as one of many disaster management teams administered by the World Bank. The profile concludes with a brief outline of the organization’s current projects. The organization attributes a large part of its success to its status as a division of the World Bank.This position endows it with a convening power that enables it to work with a wide variety of stake-holders to create sustainable risk reduction programs.
