520 3    |a This document outlines the many inconsistencies in assessing progress towards disaster risk reduction (DRR) goals and objectives. It provides a list of indicators for DRR. Currently there are no standardized indicators for DRR due to differences in data collection techniques, and conflicting ideas about which variables can best demonstrate progress towards or failure to implement DRR. While this is not entirely negative, as these differences themselves allow for the coverage of a variety of aspects of the DRR implementation process that if left to one contributor would be overlooked, some standards for assessing progress should be established. With the publication of Indicators of Disaster Risk and Risk Management, DRR specialists should be one step closer to providing a complete list of indicators for risk reduction. In this document, ProVention draws from four specialists in its efforts to support the Tsunami Recovery Impact Assessment and Monitoring System (TRIAMS), each focusing on a different aspect of risk reduction. The document covers (1) Linking Risk to Recovery, (2) Rehabilitation and Development, (3) Social Vulnerability, Institutional Capacities, and Infrastructure, as well as (4) Municipal Planning. Overall, the indicators used in assessing DRR within tsunami-hit countries prove relevant as they take into consideration the risk factors unique to this type of hazard. However, one wishes that the contributors were able to provide a complete list of the sources that should be used to gather the information for these indicators.
