Summary:
This document is a source of basic information on global warming, its impact on sustainable development, and possible solutions to this growing problem. It challenges dominant development models that focus on economic growth as opposed to sustainable development. Development has always been equated with quick, portable profit for a small number of people (most notably the developed states) that do not have to live with the results, leaving those (developing) states that they use to turn a profit to live with the effects. The guide stridently requests that developed states ask themselves, “Are we making it worse? Do we put more people in vulnerable positions because of development?” The answer is a resounding, ‘Yes’. Vulnerability is a social problem touching the nerve endings of the world structure because the disasters associated with global warming that generally affect the poorest people (the developing world), are now affecting the rich (the developed world). The solutions to this problem require collaboration between the developed and developing world. The document demands that: 1) the world cut emissions; and 2) the industrialized countries take responsibility and make binding commitments to fight global warming. It has an interesting take on how this should be done – the level of commitment should be based on historical output. It provides the usual ecosystem-based adaptation solution such as wind and solar power but also discusses tidal and wave power and geothermal energy. The funding of this venture proves intriguing. It calls for a fund that is democratically managed. While well meaning, some of the solutions appear to be unrealizable due to substantial barriers to proper financing and political will. ( English )
