Notes

Summary:
This pamphlet outlines the main participants and objectives of Provention Consortium’s Partnership for Risk Reduction. Additionally, it provides a synopsis of the dominant views, platforms, and agreements within the disaster risk reduction (DRR) field, namely the universal effects and costs of disaster, the result of human impact on the earth, and the priorities of action for the Hyogo Framework of Action. Like most community-based DRR documents, this pamphlet calls for the decentralization of DRR in the form of awareness campaigns for local authorities, the strengthening of the local management capacity, and the building of a global platform for local authorities to influence DRR strategies. Interestingly, there is mention of a new forum – the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction – that includes local, regional, governmental, and international organizations in conjunction with the private sector, civil society, and the science and academic fields, which aims at expanding the political space dedicated to DRR. As a relatively new initiative, the document does not provide much information on the forum; however, it does show that all relevant actors in DRR are acknowledging the need to take initiative to minimize the effects and costs of disaster.
