|a This joint publication provides valuable and readily accessible information on child and maternal safety. While it contains information based on the latest scientific research, it is written in a way that is understandable by those without advanced technical knowledge, and thus can be easily applied. The publication asserts that about 11 million children die, and millions more barely survive, every year as a result of preventable diseases. The five main causes identified in the document are pneumonia, diarrhea, measles, malaria, and malnutrition. To address this issue, the publication calls for educating parents and other caregivers on basic safety measures and how to implement them. These measures include establishing two-year spaces between births, mandatory visits for every pregnant woman to a health care provider during and after the pregnancy period, early childhood education and nourishment, breastfeeding during the child’s first six months, complete child immunization, prevention of serious injuries, building children’s awareness of accidents and injuries, ensuring safe access to recreation and education, equal family protection for boys and girls, as well as the provision of attention and care for children and women during disasters, conflicts, or epidemics. This document asserts that people have a right to information that helps them prevent death and disease. It calls on health workers, teachers, students, government officials, radio broadcasters, journalists, community workers, religious leader, and all other members of at-risk communities to communicate these simple yet invaluable measures whenever and wherever possible. |
