520 3    |a This document discusses the positive impact of Practical Action’s community preparedness project on three disaster-prone districts in Bangladesh and their ability to withstand the impacts of the 2007 floods. Since the inhabitants of these districts experience extreme poverty, poor health, little education, and little access to government services and information, the community preparedness project was significant in reducing loss of life due to natural hazards. The project had two major components. First, it involved a survey-based field study of rural households in order to learn how people within these communities had responded to natural hazards in the recent past. The second component focused more exclusively on community disaster preparedness efforts. These efforts included learning to improve usage of local knowledge in preparedness measures, mitigation activities, and capacity building and training on DRR issues. The community preparedness project was applied in the three districts of Bangladesh before the 2007 floods. The July and August 2007 floods in Bangladesh provided an opportunity to assess how useful the project was in reducing loss of life and destruction related to natural hazards. Interviews with people in these districts showed that the community-based preparedness project substantially reduced the level of damages from the floods. The Practical Action project in Bangladesh displays the significance of community-based preparedness efforts among DRR activities. Therefore, lessons learned from this project could be highly relevant in other disaster-prone settings.
