- This pictorial book reflects activities of the Practical Action project “Mainstreaming Livelihood-Centred Approaches to Disaster Management”, which was executed in Bangladesh, Nepal, Peru, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe between 2006 and 2010. The preface mentions two major objectives of the project: (i) increasing the resilience of communities vulnerable to disasters through strengthened livelihoods and increased preparedness, and (ii) supporting stakeholders at different levels (village, district and national) in their adoption of livelihood-centered approaches to disaster risk reduction. Throughout the book, each of thirty-two pages has a picture along with a brief note that reflects the context, strategies, and results of the project. In doing so, it notes two central strategies. The first deals with strengthening local institutions via knowledge, skill, equipment, and linkages (p.6-10). In this regard, the project underlined the significance of community based-systems for awareness raising, warning dissemination, and rescue operations. The second strategy is concerned with expanding livelihood options by means of asset transfers and skill development (p.17-25). The images found in the document deal with issues such as soil erosion, the impact of floods on agricultural livelihoods, the vulnerabilities facing the elderly, hazard-resistant housing construction, protecting water points and latrines from flood risks, and disaster resilient livelihoods. The document particularly focuses on the promotion of community participation in disaster risk reduction (DRR) and disaster risk management (DRM) activities, with an emphasis on the empowerment of women in these processes. The pictures thus emphasize the various ways that women are being assisted in developing resilient income-earning livelihoods, as well as the ways they are being incorporated in risk identification and mitigation activities.
